ABS Welcomes Dr. Amit Joshi as Editor-in-Chief of SCORE

The American Board of Surgery (ABS), the national certifying body for general surgeons and related specialists, is pleased to welcome Dr. Amit R.T. Joshi as editor-in-chief for the Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE®).

Dr. Joshi is the associate dean for graduate medical education and a professor of surgery at the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in Camden, NJ, as well as a general surgeon at Cooper University Health System. Following medical school at Brown University, Dr. Joshi completed his residency training at New York Presbyterian/Cornell, followed by a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at North Shore/Long Island Jewish Hospitals. His research and clinical interests include general surgery, minimally invasive hernia surgery, and surgical education.

Dr. Joshi is currently a director on the ABS Board of Directors, and in this capacity, also serves on the ABS Audit Committee. He has been part of the SCORE leadership team since 2015, and served as the associate editor of SCORE from 2019-2021. Dr. Joshi succeeds Dr. Mary Klingensmith as SCORE's editor-in-chief, as she moves on to an exciting new role with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Dr. Joshi's passion for surgical education stems from his desire to leave a legacy in surgery for the future. "I enjoy great satisfaction in seeing my students and mentees grow professionally and personally," he said. "I love it when a resident learns how to do an operation better than I can!"

In his vision for the future of SCORE, Dr. Joshi hopes to make the platform even more user-friendly and valuable for trainees and program directors across multiple surgical specialties. His ultimate goal is to help every institution or organization that he works with become better at what they do and align with their mission or vision through the SCORE platform.

Dr. Joshi currently serves on the board of directors and as a member of the executive committee for the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS), in addition to helping to launch their Educational Quality Improvement Program (EQIP). He is a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), a past-president of the Philadelphia chapter of the ACS, and serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Surgical Education.

In his free time, Dr. Joshi enjoys traveling with his family, listening to classical music, and spending time outdoors running, playing tennis, and gardening.

About the ABS
The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 for the purpose of certifying individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of surgery. Surgeons certified by the ABS have completed at least five years of surgical training following medical school and successfully completed a written and oral examination process administered by the ABS. They must then maintain their board certification through ongoing learning and practice improvement activities.
The ABS offers board certification in general surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, complex general surgical oncology, surgery of the hand, and hospice and palliative medicine. It is one of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

The Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE®) was formed in 2006 as a nonprofit consortium by the principal organizations involved in U.S. surgical education. In fall 2019, SCORE merged with the ABS. SCORE's mission is to improve the education of residents in general surgery and related specialties through the development of a national curriculum. SCORE's primary feature, the SCORE Portal, delivers educational content aligned with the curriculum to residents, fellows and training programs.

SCORE School to Extend through August

SCORE is pleased to announce that the TWIS-based webinar series “SCORE School” will extend through the end of August. SCORE School debuted 6 weeks ago as a didactic resource while hospitals and faculty faced changes to learning schedules during COVID-19. In response to this continuing situation, SCORE School will continue through August. Sessions will be on Wednesdays at 8 PM ET.

Upcoming topics can be found on the Webinars page.

SCORE has implemented a QR code so subscribing programs can track trainee attendance if in need of that data. In the first 4 weeks of the webinar series, there were 3,112 views (35% of them live, 65% later views of the recordings). Even several weeks later, each webinar is typically viewed 20-30 times a day on the portal.

We are grateful to all the faculty from around the country who have volunteered their time and effort for this collaborative endeavor. SCORE School has received an enthusiastic response from viewers, owed in part to the expertise and dedication of surgeon presenters and the engaged and vocal audience.
